The Atelier Archives were set up for a sneak peek at the library for the Atelier Juried Invitational opening. We have amassed several thousand rare and historical art books and catalogs for the in-house use of our students and friends of the Atelier, with more books to come. Complete with a coffee nook, drafting table, and work space, the new library will surely become a bustling center of study, creation, and discussion.

Stony Brook Prep Visits Atelier

What does it mean to be human? Deb Davis brought her 12th grade English class at the Stony Brook School to the Atelier to experience at least three of the myriad answers to that crucial question. Having just finished watching the movie The Intouchables, Davis' students came to the studio to do three very human things that the movie brilliantly champions: to take risks, to create art, and to connect with others along the journey.

The Atelier Abroad

The Atelier at Flowerfield is pleased to announce that our student Lewis Sawatzky has spent this month in Italy sipping espresso, sampling prosciutto, swirling Chianti, and doing a bit of drawing and painting.

Lewis Sawatzky painting from life at the easel.

Lewis is the second student in our foreign exchange program with the Charles Cecil Studios of Florence, Italy.  This one-month program is an intensive immersion in Classical Portrait Drawing and Painting Studies for eight hours a day. Lewis reports that his studies at the Atelier at Flowerfield prepared him well for this intensive study.

Our Director Kevin McEvoy studied for several years at the The Charles Cecil Studios, a private atelier in Florence, Italy run by American painter and art historian Charles H. Cecil, who was trained by R. H. Ives Gammell. Offering training in classical techniques of drawing and oil painting, this Florentine art studio occupies the most historic Florentine atelier still in active use. The curriculum stems directly from the leading ateliers of nineteenth-century Paris. Fundamental to the teaching is the practice of drawing and painting from life. Another important practice is the sight-size technique whereby subject and image are depicted to scale as seen from a given distance.

Click here to visit the Charles Cecil Studios website.
